The UConn MBA Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) provide an overview of what to expect from your MBA experience. New and current students will find answers to questions regarding the admissions process, course prerequisites and courses offered, the MBA community and events, financial aid more. Executive MBA FAQs

What is the average amount of work experience EMBA students have?

About 10 years on average. However, we have current students with work experience ranging from 6-30 years.

What is the average age of students in the program?

The average age of our students is about 38, but we have students ranging from 27-65 years old.  

When are classes typically offered?

Our program is designed for working professionals. Therefore, our classes are held in-person in Hartford, CT every other Saturday and one Friday every six weeks from 8am-6:15pm.

How many students are in the program?

The EMBA is a cohort program, and you will be taking all your classes with a group of 25-30 students.

How much work outside of the classroom is necessary each week?

It depends on each individual student and the specific course. As a general guideline, we estimate that for every hour spent in the classroom, you should dedicate the same amount of time to work outside of the classroom each week.

How long does it usually take to complete the program?

The EMBA follows a set schedule of classes that you will complete in 20 months

Are international students eligible for the EMBA program?

No. The EMBA is a part-time program and therefore we are unable to offer student visas to international students for this program.

Flex MBA FAQs

What is the average amount of work experience UConn MBA students have?

About 8 years. However, we have current students with work experience ranging from 2-30 years.

When are classes typically offered?

Our program is designed for working professionals To offer the utmost flexibility, our classes are held during the evenings during the week, on weekends, or online.

How many students are in the program?

There are 600 active MBA students spread across our campuses in Hartford, Stamford and Waterbury as well as online

How much work outside of the classroom is necessary each week?

It depends on each individual student and the specific course. As a general guideline, we estimate that for every hour spent in the classroom, you should dedicate the same amount of time to work outside of the classroom each week. 

How long does it usually take to complete the program?

While we allow up to 6 years to complete the program, most students complete the program in 2-3 years. It really depends on the individual and what their schedule allows. Students can complete the program in less than two years with a more intense schedule if they choose. 

Are international students eligible for the Flex MBA program?

Yes. The University of Connecticut can issue an I-20 form for Flex MBA students. If you are interested in studying in the MBA program and require a student visa, please contact our MBA team for more information. If you are already in the U.S. on a visa, you are responsible to ensure that taking classes will not violate the terms of your visa status. The University cannot determine this for you.

What is the average age of students in the program?

The average age of our students is about 30, but we have students ranging from 22-60 years old.

Am I able to take a class at another campus that is not my primary campus?

Yes. Flex MBA students can take classes at our Hartford or Stamford campuses as well as engage in online courses 

Online MBA FAQs

What time of day are classes offered?

The Online MBA has two options: the online cohort and the online flex For cohort students most of your core required courses are delivered in an asynchronous format; this means you will complete classwork at your own convenience. In addition to the core asynchronous courses, there is a 90-minute synchronous class scheduled for Monday evening from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Elective courses can be either asynchronous or synchronous. All classes will be scheduled in the evening. Students who choose the online flex option will choose from a variety of classes each semester. Some are synchronous, others will be asynchronous, but all will be fully online.  

How long does it take to complete the program?

While we allow up to 6 years to complete the program, most students complete the program in 2-3 years. It really depends on the individual and what their schedule allows. Students can complete the program in less than two years with a more intense schedule if they choose.  

How many students are in the online MBA program?

Approximately 100 students are currently in the Online MBA program. However, it is growing fast, and we anticipate doubling those numbers in the next year.  

What is the average age of an online MBA student?

The average age of an Online MBA student is 31 years old. We see students ranging from their early 20s through to their 50s. 

Can online students attend events on campus?

Absolutely. Whenever feasible, we highly encourage online students to attend on campus events. For those not able to make it to campus, we also schedule virtual events that are open to all MBA students. 

Do students intern while pursuing their degree?

Most of our students are full-time working professionals, therefore many do not intern. Additionally, the courses within the Online MBA curriculum do not incorporate internships for credit. Though we do not have a required internship component in our program, we do have Online MBA designated career counselors who can assist you with your internship/job search and preparation if you would like to organize an internship independently. 

When should applicants expect an admissions decision?

Applicants will receive a decision by the indicated response date that corresponds with the deadline found on the Business School's website. We aim to provide admissions decision with 2-3 weeks of receiving your completed application (including your letters of recommendation).

How are students notified about their admissions decision?

Decisions are shared via email. The decision will also be available on the application portal. 

What semesters can I apply for?

The Online MBA offers new student intake every fall semester for the fast OMBA. The Flex OMBA accepts new students every Fall, Summer and Spring 

Is there an application deadline?

Yes, we have specific deadlines every year. Please be sure to verify the deadline for the semester you are applying for at https://grad.business.uconn.edu/deadlines 

Is there an undergraduate GPA requirement for admission?

We seek at least a 3.0 GPA from your previous studies. If you fall below this GPA, please contact our Admissions team to discuss your options. 

Is there a minimum work experience requirement for admission?

We require at least two years of professional work experience. If you do not meet this minimum requirement, please contact our Admissions team to discuss your options.  

How many courses are required to graduate?

The degree requires 14 total courses, 9 of which are core classes and 5 of which are elective classes. 

Is there a maximum time limit to complete the program?

Yes, you must complete the program within six years. 

Are there any prerequisite classes for the OMBA?

We do not require prerequisite courses. Our curriculum is designed to accommodate students from all different educational backgrounds. 

Who should write a letter of recommendation on my behalf?

Letters from professors, business professionals, employers, etc. are acceptable. We encourage you to submit at least one of the letters from a current or previous direct supervisor/manager. The second letter can be your choice of a professor, coworker, employer, professional mentor, etc. 

Can I upload copies of my letters of recommendation?

No. While you are completing the application, you will be prompted to enter the information regarding your references, including their email addresses. Once your references are added, they will receive an email with a personalized link to securely upload their recommendation. You should not upload any letters of recommendation yourself. 

Is the GMAT/GRE required?

The GMAT/GRE is not required for the Online MBA program. However, if you wish to submit your GMAT/GRE scores to strengthen your application, you are welcome to do so. 

What documents are required with my application?

You must complete an online application and upload your unofficial transcript(s), resume, one personal essay, and two letters of recommendation. 

Do I need an official transcript for the application?

No, you only need to upload your unofficial copy of your transcript into the online application. If you are admitted, you will be prompted to furnish your official transcript which must be submitted directly from your previous institution(s). (Please note that UConn undergraduates will not be required to submit their official transcripts upon matriculation but will still be required to send their unofficial transcripts when applying.) 

Is the TOEFL/IELTS/PTE required?

If your native language is not English, you may be required to submit evidence of your proficiency in the English language. Please visit the Graduate School website where the policy is outlined in more detail. 

What if I am not sure which concentration to pursue?

Though you must select a concentration on your application, you have the option to change your concentration while in the program. Be sure to connect with your academic advisor about other available concentrations. We recommend that you decide on a concentration early in the program, so you can take the correct elective courses. 

Can I save my application and finish it later?

Yes. You will be prompted to create login credentials to access the application and complete it at your own pace. Please be sure your completed application is submitted before the deadline. 

Is there a cost differential between in state and out-of-state students?

There is no difference in cost for the Online MBA, no matter where you live. 

Is there a cost differential if I take winter or summer courses?

No. All semesters/sessions carry the same cost per credit per academic year.

Can I save my application and finish it later?

Yes. You will be prompted to create login credentials to access the application and complete it at your own pace. Please be sure your completed application is submitted before the deadline. 

Does tuition need to be paid in full upfront?

Our tuition is set up on a per-credit basis. Therefore, you will make a payment each semester based on the number of credits you are taking that semester. Payment plans are available for the fall and spring semesters. You can learn more about payment plan options through the Bursar's Office. 

Is financial aid available?

Financial assistance may be available to matriculated students in a degree-seeking program. If you have questions, please contact the Financial Aid office directly. You can visit their website for more information: https://www.financialaid.uconn.edu/ or contact them at financialaid@uconn.edu

Are there Military / Veterans benefits available?

Our tuition is set up on a per-credit basis. Therefore, you will make a payment each semester based on the number of credits you are taking that semester. Payment plans are available for the fall and spring semesters. You can learn more about payment plan options through the Bursar's Office. 

Is there an application fee?

Yes, there is a $75 non-refundable application fee required when you submit your application.

Are there application fee waivers?

Are scholarships available?

We do not offer any scholarships for new students. However, once you are a current student in the program, you will be notified of any available scholarships and may apply for individual awards.
